An honest side-by-side of the three adventure tours most people book on Koh Samui, with the thrill, the effort, the weather risk and the price of each, plus how to fit them into one trip.

Every week someone messages me the same question from a sunbed in Chaweng: "We have budget for one big thrill, maybe two. Jet ski, zipline or quads?" It is a fair question, because these are the three adventure activities Koh Samui visitors book most, and they feel completely different. One is speed on open sea, one is flying through the jungle on a cable, and one is driving yourself up muddy hill tracks.
I have watched hundreds of guests come back from all three. Here is how they compare in thrill, effort, heat, weather risk and price, and which one I would pick for different kinds of travellers.
The top three are the jet ski safari to Pig Island and Koh Tan, the Hawk Adventure zipline park in the jungle, and the ATV quad and buggy safari in the hills. Samui Elephant Kingdom is the other big favourite, but it is a calm visit, not an adrenaline one.
What makes these three stand out is that each gets you somewhere you could not easily reach alone. The jet ski takes you across open water to two small islands. The zipline puts you above the canopy next to a hidden waterfall. The ATV gets you onto dirt tracks in the interior of the island, far from the beach roads where most visitors spend their holiday.
Here is the quick comparison before the details:
| Jet ski safari | Hawk Adventure zipline | ATV quad safari | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | ฿5990 per jet ski (up to 2 people) | Silver ฿1690, Gold ฿2390 per person | From ฿2190 (quad, 1 driver, 2 hours) |
| Duration | 3 hours | About 1 hour (Silver) or 2 hours (Gold) | 2 or 3 hours |
| Where | Open sea to Koh Madsum and Koh Tan | Jungle canopy by Zong Raue waterfall | Jungle and hill tracks, viewpoint, waterfall |
| Thrill | Speed, waves, freedom | Height, abseil drops | Control, bumps, off-road |
| Physical effort | Medium to high on choppy days | Low to medium, lots of stairs | Medium, arms and concentration |
| Weather risk | Highest, depends on the sea | Lowest | Low, rain just means mud |
| Kids | Passengers from 6, drivers from 14 | Ask when booking | Passengers with an adult, drivers from 12 if able |
The jet ski safari is the most intense of the three and the most expensive per person if you ride alone. It is also the one that most depends on the sea, so it needs a bit of flexibility in your plans.
The tour starts at Chaweng Beach. After a briefing you ride for about an hour to Koh Madsum, the island everyone knows as Pig Island, where you get 20 to 30 minutes on the sand with the pigs. Then you continue to Koh Tan for snorkeling over the coral reef, before the ride back. The machines are Yamaha VX-C 1050cc, and an instructor leads the group. It runs twice a day, morning and afternoon.

The price of ฿5990 is per jet ski, and two people can ride on one, so for a couple it becomes far more reasonable. Children aged 6 and over can ride as passengers with an adult, and driving on your own is allowed from 14. Never ridden one before? Most people get the feel within minutes.
The honest downsides. An hour each way on open water is tiring on the arms and the back, especially when there is chop. If the wind picks up, the ride gets bumpy and slower, and on rough days the tour may not go at all. You also get a lot of sun on the water, with no shade between the islands. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and plenty of sunscreen.
Who should choose it: couples, friends who love speed and anyone who wants the islands and the sea in one trip. For the full picture of the route, read the jet ski tour guide on the blog.
The zipline is the easiest of the three to fit into any day and the least affected by weather. You are clipped in the whole time, the instructors handle the safety, and your job is to enjoy the view and scream if you want to.
Hawk Adventure is the largest zipline park on Koh Samui, set in jungle opposite the hidden Zong Raue waterfall. There are two routes: Silver with 13 platforms and 2000 m in about an hour, and Gold with 33 platforms and 5000 m in about two hours. Gold has 21 zip lines up to 600 m, three abseil drops of 20, 30 and 40 m, suspension bridges and sky corridors. Silver has one abseil drop of 40 m.

The gear is PETZL, and at least two instructors go with every group along the route. There is cold drinking water on the platforms, and Thai snacks, fruit, coffee and tea before you start. There are three hotel pickups a day, morning, midday and afternoon, which makes it easy to fit around other plans.
The downsides: there is a lot of climbing on stairs and spiral staircases between platforms, and the jungle is humid. You will sweat even though you are in the shade. The abseil drops are the part that scares people, not the zip lines themselves. If you have a real fear of heights, start with Silver, it is shorter and has only one drop.
My opinion: Gold is worth the extra money if you are going anyway. The second hour is where you stop being nervous and start enjoying it. More detail is in the review is the Hawk Adventure zipline worth it.
The ATV safari is for people who want to drive, not be driven. You steer a quad or a buggy along jungle and hill tracks with a guide, and the day ends dusty or muddy, depending on the weather.
The 2-hour programme goes to a viewpoint and a secret waterfall. The 3-hour programme adds a mysterious temple, from ฿3290. A quad with one driver for 2 hours is ฿2190, with a passenger ฿3190, and a two-seat buggy ฿4990. The quads have automatic transmission, and there is a briefing and short training before you set off.

The price includes the transfer, insurance, soft drinks, a helmet and a face mask for the dust. You will need that mask in the dry months. Children from 12 can drive their own quad if they handle it well, and a quad is designed for two people or an adult with a child.
The downsides: it is bumpy from start to finish, so it is not for anyone with a bad back. It is hot under a helmet, and you finish dirty. The good news is that rain rarely stops it, it just makes the trail muddier, which many riders actually enjoy. Full prices and options are on the ATV quad and buggy safari page.
Pick the one that matches the kind of thrill you want, not the one your friends did. If you love speed and the sea, take the jet ski. If you want height and a guaranteed day, take the zipline. If you want to be in control on land, take the ATV.
A few more specific suggestions from what I see guests enjoy most:

If I had to pick only one for a first visit, I would choose the jet ski when the sea is calm, because it gives you speed, two islands, the pigs and snorkeling in one trip. If the sea is not cooperating that week, the Gold zipline is the best replacement, as it never feels like a second choice.
Here are the three tours side by side: the jet ski for sea and speed lovers, the zipline for anyone who wants height without risk, and the ATV for those who want to drive:
The sea matters most for the jet ski, rain matters a little for the ATV, and the zipline goes ahead in almost any weather. That is the single most useful thing to know when you plan your week.
On Samui the wind and waves change with the season. Around the end of the year the northeast monsoon usually brings rougher sea and more rain to the island, while the middle of the year tends to be calmer on the east side. These are general patterns, not guarantees, and a calm week can happen in any month. Book the jet ski early in your trip, so there is time to move it if the sea is rough on the day.

The ATV is the opposite. A morning of rain turns the trails into mud, and plenty of riders say that was the best ride of their life. Only real storms cause a change of plan. The zipline is under the canopy, and light rain hardly matters, though the platforms are more humid.
The heat affects all three. The jet ski is in full sun on the water, the ATV is under a helmet on open tracks, and the zipline is humid but shaded. Morning slots are cooler for everything, so if you are sensitive to heat, start early.
Yes, and many guests do. Each one takes half a day with the transfer, so they fit easily into a week without wearing you out. The trick is not to stack them back to back on the same day.
A good plan for a 7-day stay looks like this:

Doing the zipline and the ATV on the same day is possible because the zipline has three pickup times, but you will be tired, sweaty and probably sunburnt by the evening. Two days is more pleasant. The jet ski plus anything else on the same day is too much for most people.
For comparing these with the calmer tours on the island, the list of 10 best tours in Koh Samui puts them all in one place.
All three include hotel pickup and drop-off, so there is nothing to rent and no driving on Samui roads. A few small things make each day easier.
You can send a booking request on any tour page or message the team on WhatsApp with your dates and hotel. If you are unsure which one suits your group, say who is coming and what scares them, and you will get a straight answer.
The zipline is the easiest for complete beginners, because you are clipped in the whole time and the instructors manage the safety. The Silver route is the shortest, about an hour. The ATV and the jet ski are also fine for first-timers after the briefing, but they need more confidence.
For two people sharing one jet ski at ฿5990, most guests think so, because you get three hours, two islands, the pigs on Koh Madsum and snorkeling at Koh Tan. Alone on a jet ski it is the most expensive of the three. It is worth it most on a calm day.
No, both need closed shoes. For the zipline, trainers that fit securely are required, and for the ATV you want shoes you can walk in on rocks and mud. Flip-flops are fine only for the jet ski.
The jet ski tour runs daily in the morning and the afternoon, and the zipline has three hotel pickups a day. Sea conditions can stop the jet ski on rough days. Check with the team when booking if the weather looks uncertain.
Each one includes a safety briefing and staff who stay with the group, and the zipline uses PETZL equipment with at least two instructors on the route. The ATV includes insurance, a helmet and training, and the jet ski includes life jackets and an instructor. Most risk comes from riding faster than your skills, so listen to the briefing.
The Silver zipline route at ฿1690 per person is the lowest price of the three. The ATV starts at ฿2190 for one driver for 2 hours. The jet ski is ฿5990 per jet ski, shared by up to two people.
On the jet ski, children from 6 can ride as passengers with an adult and drive alone from 14. On the ATV, children from 12 can drive if they handle the quad well, and younger ones ride with an adult. For the zipline, tell the team the age and height of your child when booking.
